Hawksmoor have arrived at Borough Market.
The Hawksmoor team took on a upper & lower ground floor space just behind Borough Market on Winchester Walk. The building used to be a former hops warehouse and auction hall, built in the early 20th Century and had recently undergone a complete strip out back to the shell and the internal floors rebuilt with a steel work frame to allow for office accommodation throughout and the restaurant to the lower levels.
The Build
Whilst the unit was perfect for Hawksmoor, it did bring a few difficulties for the build team. The shell had one drainage point in the basement which had to cater for the public toilets, kitchens and bars, no staircase between floors, a tanked basement and restricted head height in areas.
Working alongside the designers, Macaulay Sinclair and the client team, we filled the space with new staircases, reclaimed paneling, feature banquettes and joinery to create a beautiful space full of signature Hawksmoor touches.
The upper ground floor is full beautiful oak paneling, a reclaimed parquet block floor, plenty of brass work to catch the eye and glazed screens creating spaces within the restaurant. The Lower ground features the public toilets, kitchens and the new Hawksmoor ‘Chefs Room’, a private dining room for 20 customers complete with its own copper clad kitchen allowing the private party to have it’s own chef who can cook up the meals as part of the entertainment.
