Restoring a historic Welsh hotel through careful rebuild, heritage control, and long term commitment.
The Royal George in Tintern is a Grade II listed hotel set deep in the Welsh valleys. The project involved the full restoration of a building that had fallen into serious disrepair, returning it to operation under its original name and purpose as a destination hotel, pub, and restaurant.
The works covered the ground floor restaurant, café, and pub, upper level hotel bedrooms and staff quarters, annexed hotel rooms across other buildings within the site, and associated landscaping. The scope required a complete strip out and asbestos removal to allow new services throughout, followed by the installation of heritage approved finishes and bespoke joinery across guest and back of house areas.
A new roof and structural alterations formed a critical part of the programme. These works stabilised sections of the building and prevented further deterioration. The team coordinated closely with designers and heritage stakeholders to protect original fabric while integrating modern building services across a complex footprint.
Working within a listed building in a remote location placed sustained pressure on logistics, sequencing, and labour planning. The project demanded long term presence, patience, and control. The outcome is a restored hotel retreat which respects its setting and history, delivered through consistent site management and careful execution.
The Royal George stands restored through steady delivery and respect for place, structure, and craft.
