Du Boulay Projects led the transformation of The Light Bar, a historic building on Shoreditch High Street.

Constructed in 1893 as a power station for Liverpool Street Station, the structure was later repurposed into a renowned nightlife venue in the early 2000s. After closing in 2014, the building was saved from demolition and reopened in 2021 following a comprehensive 12-week refurbishment. The project involved restoring original features and introducing modern elements across three floors, culminating in a dynamic bar and restaurant that celebrates its storied past.

The scope of work included infilling the first floor, creating new openings, and installing two three-level staircases to connect the ground, mezzanine, and first floors. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services were updated. Bespoke joinery elements, such as three bars, waiter stations, and feature screens, were crafted to enhance the venue’s unique character. Preserving the building’s industrial charm, original brickwork and concrete floors were retained, complemented by reclaimed timber flooring on the mezzanine and first floors. The project was completed in June 2020, allowing the venue to open for outdoor terrace dining amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Designed by Macaulay Sinclair, the interiors honor the building’s history while introducing contemporary design elements. The ground floor, known as The Engine Hall, features a spacious bar and dining area with original arched windows that flood the space with natural light. The mezzanine houses The Copper Bar, characterized by teal and green accents, marble bar counters, bespoke mid-century inspired furniture, and lush plantings. The top floor, The Timber Loft, offers a more intimate setting with original timber beams and a menu curated by chef Ali Borer. The outdoor terrace is adorned with Iroko wood and features bespoke furniture, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The project faced the unprecedented challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic midway through construction. Adhering to government guidelines, the team paused work until it was safe to resume, implementing safety measures such as working in bubbles and using appropriate PPE. Despite these challenges, the project was completed on time and within budget, culminating in a venue that pays homage to its rich history while offering a modern and inviting space for patrons.
