du Boulay Projects worked with Transit Studio to deliver an apartment within the basement of a Grade II listed property near Hyde Park.

The design focused on enhancing natural light and spatial flow so du Boulay began by removing internal partitions to create two en-suite bathrooms and a guest WC. The kitchen was re-positioned adjacent to the internal courtyard, fostering a central communal space. Natural materials such as pale walls, wide oak flooring, and marble surfaces were used throughout, complemented by custom quarter-sawn oak kitchen joinery with walnut detailing and midcentury furniture pieces

Project Delivery:
The project involved a comprehensive internal reconfiguration to optimise space and light. Structural challenges were complex given the buildings listed status. We designed and installed a picture frame structure to fully open out the space. The challenge was addressed with a simplified structural design to create open, uncluttered spaces. The design emphasised natural materials and bespoke furnishings to create a cohesive and inviting environment.

Design Highlights:
The interior design features a harmonious blend of natural materials, including pale walls, wide oak flooring, and marble surfaces in the kitchen and bathrooms. Custom joinery, such as the quarter-sawn oak kitchen with walnut detailing, adds warmth and sophistication. Mid-century furniture pieces contribute to the timeless aesthetic. The strategic placement of the kitchen adjacent to the internal courtyard enhances the sense of openness and connectivity within the space.

Challenges and Achievements:
A primary challenge was re-imagining the lower-ground space to maximize natural light and functionality while respecting the building’s historical significance. Through thoughtful design, including the removal of non-structural partitions and the use of light-enhancing materials, the team successfully transformed the space into a bright, open, and modern living area. The integration of custom furnishings and careful spatial planning resulted in a cohesive and inviting home that honours the property’s heritage.
