Hawksmoor Edinburgh is situated in the former National Bank of Scotland Banking Hall, a Grade A listed building of national importance. The design preserves original Art Deco features, including polished limestone interiors and etched glass windows, while introducing elements like lighting sourced from a Dutch Art Deco hotel to enhance the 1930s ambiance.
Project Delivery:
The transformation involved meticulous restoration to honor the building’s historical significance. The design team replicated original features such as mouldings and joinery, ensuring a seamless blend between the new restaurant and the building’s storied past.
Design Highlights:
The interior features a harmonious blend of restored Art Deco elements and contemporary design. Notable aspects include polished limestone-clad interiors, etched glass windows designed by Sadie McLellan, and lighting sourced from a Dutch Art Deco hotel, all contributing to an authentic 1930s feel.
Challenges and Achievements:
A primary challenge was integrating modern dining requirements while preserving the building’s historical features. The design team successfully navigated this by restoring original elements and thoughtfully introducing period-appropriate details, culminating in a space that honors its heritage while providing a unique dining experience
du Boulay have been a great partner to Hawksmoor over the past 8 years, building all of our restaurants apart from the original at Spitalfields. They show true professionalism and a great attention to detail that sets them apart from other contractors. I look forward to working together for many years to come
