The Groucho Club, an iconic members’ club in London’s Soho, underwent a significant redesign led by Michaelis Boyd Associates. The project aimed to modernize the club’s facilities while preserving its unique character and history. The renovation included the creation of a new main space, The Carter Room, formed by combining three bedrooms to provide a spacious event area filled with art and color. Adjacent to this, the Gennaro Room was also transformed, featuring a bar with a striking stainless steel facade and a deep purple and blue marble countertop
Project Delivery:
The redesign encompassed a comprehensive overhaul of the club’s layout, which had evolved organically over the years. The project involved restoring original features such as the main staircase and timber paneling, while introducing modern elements to enhance functionality and aesthetics. The Soho Bar, a central feature of the club, was updated with a reclaimed wood floor sourced from the BBC’s historic Bush House, and eclectic furniture pieces set against dramatic green-blue walls.
Design Highlights:
The club’s interiors are characterized by a sophisticated blend of contemporary design and classic elements. The walls are adorned with a salon-style art collection, providing a dynamic backdrop to the spaces. The dining areas feature luxurious Brazilian marble tables and sprung, curved banquettes, creating a rich yet comfortable environment. Acoustic treatments, including a floating acoustic floor and ceiling, ensure optimal sound quality throughout the venue.
Challenges and Achievements:
Balancing the preservation of The Groucho Club’s storied heritage with the introduction of modern design elements presented a unique challenge. The successful renovation has resulted in a refreshed and cohesive space that honors the club’s legacy while providing members with enhanced facilities. The integration of contemporary art, luxurious materials, and thoughtful design has reinforced the club’s status as a vibrant cultural hub in the heart of Soho.
