Aquavit London, located in the heart of St. James’s Market, occupies a Grade II listed building that has been thoughtfully redesigned by Martin Brudnizki Design Studio. The design draws inspiration from Gunnar Asplund’s architectural work, notably the Gothenburg City Hall in Sweden, resulting in a spacious, light-filled dining area that reflects Scandinavian simplicity. The interiors feature a harmonious blend of leather, silk, and wool textures, complemented by antique chairs and custom wooden tables, creating an atmosphere of refined elegance
Project Delivery:
The design preserves the building’s historic charm while introducing modern elements. A curved perimeter of rose gold mirror and timber paneling frames two private dining rooms located on a mezzanine level, adding a touch of luxury to the space. The ground floor is adorned with Swedish marble, enhancing the Nordic aesthetic. Artistic touches include textile wall hangings by Olafur Eliasson and Barbro Nilsson, as well as silverware from Georg Jensen, contributing to the restaurant’s contemporary Nordic ambiance.
Design Highlights:
The interior design emphasises a blend of traditional and modern Nordic elements. The use of leather, silk, and wool creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, while antique chairs and bespoke wooden tables add character and authenticity to the space. The private dining rooms on the mezzanine level, framed by rose gold mirror and timber paneling, offer an intimate setting for guests. The ground floor’s Swedish marble flooring and artistic wall hangings further enhance the restaurant’s unique design.
Challenges and Achievements:
Balancing the preservation of the building’s historic features with the introduction of contemporary design elements presented a unique challenge. The project successfully honors the building’s heritage while creating a modern and inviting dining environment. The integration of Nordic design principles, both in the culinary offerings and the interior aesthetics, has established Aquavit London as a distinctive and welcoming destination in St. James’s Market.
